Grief Encounter was set up in December 2003 by Shelley Gilbert to help bereaved children deal with the loss of either a parent or sibling. Shelley – now a mother of four – who lost her mother at the age of 4 and her father at 9, understands how the loss of a loved one can have profound and potentially devastating effects on everyone involved. Shelley has dedicated much of her adult life to working with troubled children as a counsellor and trainer and has made it her mission to ensure that today’s bereaved child will have somewhere to turn in their moment of need. This, together with her academic work, TV appearances and personal awards, has made her one of the country’s leading experts on childhood grief.

Now, together with her charity, Shelley is working to raise public understanding of the emotional distress young people experience following such a loss. Her vision is to ensure that every child and young person receives the correct support, information and advice following the death of a loved one.
